Supporting a remote's island path to resilience
Summer of 2026 is approaching and it is a good opportunity to for a ENPOWER's achievement to Greek pilot.
The ChalkiOn energy community is located in the remote island of Chalki, Greece. The island is not connected to the main grid, but only with the island of Rhodes, where the majority of the energy mix comes from diesel generators. The energy community owns a 1MWp PV park, located in the island, that the energy surplus is either consumed by the other people in the island or it is exported to Rhodes. Which is why it is so important to ensure that most of the renewable energy stays in the island, reducing the reliance to the island of Rhodes and increasing its resilience.
Last summer, through FLEXCOMM's (tool developed in the project by NTUA) real time monitoring and forecasting functionalities, a failure in one of the four inverters was identified. The energy community manager was immediately alerted and initiated the process of replacement, that took some days. The energy community usually identifies within a span of multiple weeks and the replacement of infrastructure takes many days as well, since is a remote island that has no access to quick services. It was estimated that due to FLEXCOMM, a one month downtime was prevented, saving approximately 30MWh in potential energy losses.
